Part 3 of 8 · The Four Noble Truths Retreat
Ajahn Sumedho on the deathless as conscious awareness here and now, and why the body, memory and imagined rebirths are not a refuge.
Ajahn Sumedho begins from the body’s ageing and illness and the habit of identifying with it, then names the deathless (amatadhamma) as what is apparent here and now: conscious awareness, as distinct from sensory consciousness. He describes a memory of anger he met in a forest hut as a young monk, and notes that awareness itself is never angry. He recalls finding Buddhist books in San Francisco as a young man, discusses imagined heavens and past lives, and quotes the Udana verse on the unborn, uncreated and unconditioned. He closes on fear, worry and regret as things known by awareness.
