Part 6 of 8 · The Four Noble Truths Retreat
Ajahn Sumedho on suppressed emotion, the silence behind thought, the Four Noble Truths as a signpost, and the three characteristics.
Ajahn Sumedho describes a method he worked out for a restless thinking mind: meditating on space, then deliberately thinking the word “I” and noticing the silence before and after it. He tells of his first year as a novice, alone in a hut, when long-suppressed anger and fear surfaced and then gave way. He contrasts concentration, which is created, with the silence that is always present, and compares the Four Noble Truths to a road sign that points to London without being London. He covers impermanence, suffering and not-self, self-consciousness and shyness, and says the Buddha’s first teaching to his five companions set out the four truths.
