Part 4 of 4 · Mindful Breathing: Deer Park Winter Retreat 2004
Thich Nhat Hanh's Dharma talk of 14 March 2004, the last lay day of the Deer Park Monastery winter retreat, on the mindfulness bell at home and the final breathing exercises.
On 14 March 2004, the last day of the retreat for lay friends, Thich Nhat Hanh opens with a bell and tells a dream of a class taught by the Buddha as professor of music, where his only instrument is a small bell. He teaches the mindfulness bell with a calming and smiling breathing verse, suggests families agree to stop and breathe when it sounds, and recommends a breathing room at home.
In the second half he returns to the final exercises: interbeing and emptiness through a flower, the Heart Sutra, teachings as instruments, the four notions of the Diamond Sutra, nirvana as letting go of all notions, and non-craving.
