Wat Yannasangwararam (the temple’s own English site spells it Yanasangvararam) lies in Huay Yai, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi, not far from Pattaya. Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, the 19th Supreme Patriarch, initiated and oversaw its building, and the monastery is named after his ecclesiastical title. The temple’s page says the first plot was donated in 1976.

The temple states his aim: a vipassana meditation training centre close to Bangkok. The compound has four zones. Buddhavas holds the main halls and the stupa. Sanghavas is the monks’ quarters, with some huts higher on the hill for monks who follow strict ascetic practice. Karavas is the lay zone, with a central hall and lodging for people who come to practise vipassana and keep the precepts. The fourth zone holds royal-initiated agricultural and wildlife projects.

Lay practice is organised through a separate site, in Thai, that lists courses and meditation rooms and says the teaching follows the Supreme Patriarch’s approach. What technique is taught, whether instruction is available in English, and the conditions for guests are not verified, so they are left out.

The monastery sits within the Dhammayuttika order, the same order as Wat Bowonniwet in Bangkok, where Somdet Nyanasamvara was abbot.

Visiting

The monastery runs a separate Thai-language site for lay meditation courses and meditation rooms. English-language teaching could not be verified, so write or ask first if you do not read Thai.
