Ajahn Jamnian Silasettho, called Luang Por Jamnian in Thai, founded Wat Tham Suea, the Tiger Cave Temple outside Krabi in southern Thailand. English spellings of his name vary; Wikipedia writes it Jumnean.
By the Thai Post’s account he was born on 1 May 1936 in Nakhon Si Thammarat province and ordained on 2 July 1957 at Wat Naree Pradit, taking the name Silasettho. After seven rains retreats there he went wandering and practising in a number of places. In 1975 he established a Vipassana practice centre at the Tiger Cave site, first as a small hermitage (samnak song). It was recognised as a full temple on 30 December 1985.
Wikipedia and the Thai Post agree on the founding year. Wikipedia adds that he went to meditate in the cave in 1975 and that the temple took its name from the tigers he saw there, one of several explanations given for the name.
From 2012, the Thai Post says, he based himself at other places, including a temple in Ratchaburi and a hermitage in Saraburi, and in his last years stayed in Malaysia for his health. The Thai Post reports that he died there on the afternoon of 18 August 2026, aged 90, after 69 rains retreats, and that his body was to be brought back to Wat Tham Suea. Merit Messenger gives the same date and says the body was received at the temple on 21 August; it credits the Thai Post as its source, so it is not a second independent report. According to Merit Messenger, he taught the four brahmaviharas (loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity), a point the Thai Post does not mention.
No book or recorded teaching of his could be verified for this page, so it lists none. The temple he founded is the best way to understand his work.
