Talk by Anam Thubten on meeting violence and upheaval with compassion rather than hatred, with an invitation to a butter lamp prayer, published by Dharmata Foundation.

Anam Thubten speaks in the days after violence in the United States, recorded at the end of May 2020. He starts from how a national tragedy during a trip to South Korea changed what he taught there, then asks how to respond when events disrupt an ordinary life: from hatred, or from compassion and courage.

He recalls a lama’s remark that his poems on absolute truth needed compassion too, tells of a Cambodian monk who chanted a Dhammapada verse on hatred with survivors, and describes why anger can feel righteous. He suggests unplugging from news, invokes Avalokiteshvara as a sacred archetype, announces a butter lamp prayer for healing, and ends on responding to the people around us from an open heart.
