Part 1 of 4 · Bodhicitta and the Bodhisattva Vow

Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche begins Atisha's Lamp for the Path to Awakening: three scopes of motivation, relative bodhichitta, merit, refuge, love and compassion.

Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche begins a weekend on Atisha’s Lamp for the Path to Awakening with the lineage supplication, composed by a master of Mahamudra, then places the text within Gampopa’s teaching. He tells why the Tibetan king invited Atisha after the persecution of Langdarma, and sets out the three scopes of motivation. A translator speaks the English.

He explains why the text teaches relative bodhichitta first, citing the Buddha’s earlier offering of a bowl of soup, and defines bodhichitta as compassion joined with discernment. He separates aspiration from implementation, then covers the preliminaries: accumulating merit, refuge, and meditating on love and compassion.
