Part 3 of 4 · Bodhicitta and the Bodhisattva Vow

Rinpoche teaches the three trainings of Atisha's Lamp: moral discipline, tranquility and discernment, with a note on Mahamudra practice and a brief recommendation of Vajrayana.

On the second day Rinpoche explains why a vow protects bodhichitta from a changing mind, then teaches Atisha’s three trainings. Moral discipline is adapted to the individual, from monastic to one-day vows, and has three aspects for a bodhisattva. Tranquility is the training of the mind. Discernment grows through hearing, reflection and meditation.

He distinguishes analytical meditation from the resting meditation of the Mahamudra and Dzogchen traditions, says he finds Mahamudra easier to fit into an ordinary life, and names books for further reading. The session ends with a short recommendation of the Vajrayana path through empowerment.
