Part 2 of 3 · Four Noble Truths and Dependent Origination

Day 2 of a three-day Bodh Gaya teaching: the mind and its afflictions, emptiness in the Heart Sutra, and the first half of the Rice Seedling Sutra, with English translation.

The Dalai Lama continues the Bodh Gaya teaching for Indian students, with an English translation. He starts from the wish for happiness that all beings share and from the Indian analysis of mental pain, names attachment, anger and ignorance as the root afflictions, and traces them to grasping at a self. He then takes up the Heart Sutra and its line that form is emptiness, using the Nalanda reasoning that things lack inherent existence because they depend on causes.

The second half reads the Rice Seedling Sutra: the twelve links of dependent arising, the outer sprout and seed, and the five aspects of dependence. He closes on why doubt and debate matter and announces the next day’s bodhichitta ceremony.
