Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche on what mind training means in Buddhism, given online to university students in English, followed by their questions.
Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche speaks in English to students of the University of Hong Kong, online. He first asks what “mind” means to a Buddhist and to a modern student, since the two may not mean the same thing. His answer to why the mind is trained is that the aim is to see the truth, not to adjust moods or temper. He takes impermanence, dissatisfaction and no-self one at a time as things to know habitually, with everyday examples, and ends on empathy and holding one’s own opinions lightly.
In the questions he says any method that helps you understand these truths is worthwhile, describes shamatha on the breath and bare watching of an emotion or craving, suggests a morning reflection that today may be the last day of what you see, and answers a question about a depressed family member.
