Part 12 of 13 · Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, Kathmandu

The philosophical schools, no thesis in Prasangika, clarity and emptiness together, and questions.

Rinpoche gives background on the schools behind the stanzas on assertions: Vaibhashika and Sautrantika, then Cittamatra and Madhyamaka, and why Prasangika Madhyamaka claims no thesis of its own. He explains how clarity and emptiness can be held apart so that a person sways towards eternalism or nihilism, and links this to form is emptiness and emptiness is form. He also reflects on the future of Buddhist study in Tibetan, Western and Chinese settings. Questions cover the first ignorance, impermanence and the end of samsara, the terms clarity and appearance, equanimity in daily work, and merit by visualisation. He closes with a line of Tsongkhapa on keeping appearance and emptiness together.
