Part 11 of 13 · Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, Kathmandu

Taking refuge, three purposes of the teachings, the moon in water, and whether Madhyamaka has a thesis.

Rinpoche says refuge is taken in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha rather than in a person, and announces a refuge and bodhisattva vow ceremony for the next morning. He then sorts the Buddha’s teachings by purpose: those that turn beings from non-virtue, those that undo self-clinging, and those that undo all fixed views. The moon’s reflection in water shows that emptiness does not deny appearance, and cause and effect stays reliable without being truly existent. Chandrakirti’s painted cow, the many forms of Avalokiteshvara and the habit of falling into extremes lead to stanzas on dependent arising and on whether Madhyamaka holds any thesis of its own, before a break.
