Part 5 of 6 · The Four Dharmas of Gampopa
Afternoon session on the completion stage and Mahamudra: the view by inference and by direct recognition, tranquility meditation, and audience questions.
Rinpoche turns to the completion stage, which he divides into the path of means, such as the Six Dharmas of Naropa, and the path of liberation, Mahamudra, which he goes on to explain. He contrasts the view reached by inference, using the reasoning of one and many illustrated with a hand, with the view reached by direct recognition of the mind, and quotes Milarepa’s lines on view and meditation. He teaches tranquility through the third Karmapa’s stanza on thoughts settling, the mind resting, and freedom from dullness, and separates tranquility’s lucidity from insight.
Three audience questions follow, on relying on Dharma protectors, on how tranquility differs from insight, and on the wording of the Four Dharmas prayer.
