Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling stands just north of Boudha Stupa. The name means “sanctuary for Kagyu and Nyingma teaching and practice”, and the monastery draws on both lineages. The 16th Karmapa asked Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche to go to Nepal, and after his sons Chökyi Nyima and Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche joined him in Kathmandu in the early 1970s, the family began to build. King Birendra inaugurated the finished monastery in 1976, and the Karmapa appointed Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche as abbot, a post he has held since. Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche served as its Dorje Lobpon, or vajra master, until his death in 2020; Gomde now lists Phakchok Rinpoche as Vajra Master.

Shedrub’s site calls it the main seat of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and his sons. The monastery says it is home to about seven hundred monks, with schooling from kindergarten through Grade Eight and then the Sangye Yeshe Shedra, the monastic college. The monks’ three-year retreats take place at Asura Cave, while the nuns of the same community are based at Nagi Gompa.

Beyond the monastery walls, Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s work includes the Rangjung Yeshe Institute, which he founded, and the Shenpen social-work projects. Shedrub is the umbrella site for these.

For a foreign visitor, the practical picture is modest. The monastery is a working community, not a tourist attraction, and its own pages publish no visiting policy. Public contact runs mostly through teachings: Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s Saturday Talks and the annual autumn seminar are offered through DharmaSun. Boudha Stupa is a short walk away. Check the official site for anything current.

Visiting

The monastery stands just north of Boudha Stupa, so it is easy to find on a kora. Its own pages do not publish a visitor policy, so check knsl.org before planning anything beyond a respectful look. Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche's Saturday Talks and the annual autumn seminar are listed on DharmaSun and Shedrub, and the seminar's location can change.
